BLM locks the gate if the roads are wet and soft, even if the day is sunny, so it will be important for you to call BLM on Friday night or Saturday morning (707- 468-4000 <%28707%29%20468-4000> and then press 1) for the current, open or closed, status of S. Cow Mountain ORV Area before you start out - especially if you're coming from a distance. It is anticipated that if Ukiah has no rain this week, the gate will likely be open. Conversely, if there is rain it is likely the gate will be locked. *But*, one can never be sure without calling. Please pass this info along to anyone who might be planning to come. Thanks Chalk Hill is a huge rock hillside with a mineral spring pouring over it, leaving a tufa deposit with a texture that looked like a tapestry of fishnet. It is way up by the top of Cow Mt and shines bright white, so can be seen from quite a distance. Fremontia is growing in the Tufa, encircling the rock. The fremontia blooms with small apricot colored flowers and has tiny leaves. We're hoping they will start blooming by April, but if not, other things will hopefully be in bloom. Chuck Williams is leading. We will carpool up to the Oakwood Springs trailhead which has tables and a restroom. Any vehicle that can can make it to the S. Cow Mtn. gate should be able to make it to the Oakwood Springs parking area. From Oakwood, it's a steep one mile hike over the ridge and down to Chalk Hill. This is a strenuous hike without much shade, but fun. The top of the ridge is the top of the world and you can see to Clear Lake and Mount Konocti. as well as a wonderful view of the rest of Cow Mountain. Meet at CVS parking lot, 155 Orchard Plaza in Ukiah, at 9 am April 7th (the day before Easter) Bring water and lunch and wear boots that will give you good footing. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Anyone desiring to carpool from Ukiah can meet Marigold & Don at the CVS parking lot alongside Orchard Ave. at 8:45 AM Sat. Montgomery Woods (northwest of Ukiah) Saturday, April 14; 9:30 a.m. to about 4 p.m. This trip will afford a look at the diverse habitats of the upland parts of the Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve. Setting out from the splendor of a redwood forest floor dappled with calypso orchids, anemones, and trilliums, we?ll walk along Pruitt Creek into the elevated hinterlands of oaks, chaparral, perennial grasses, and rocks. Plan on a long, moderately strenuous walk of 4 to 6 miles. We?ll meet at the Pruitt Creek gate (about 1 mile east of the Reserve?s main parking lot) at 9:30 a.m. Further information, and to let me know you?ll be joining us: Peter (707) 978-3155; phytopagan at sonic.net. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
